RESUMO

Aspergillus infection is relatively rare disease, and we present a case of orbital aspergillus infection who presented with right orbital pain and swelling. Right orbital lesion was identified on CT, MRI, and PET-CT imaging followed by confirmation of aspergillus on histopathological examination. We demonstrate that Tc-99 m ubiquicidin scan can yield positive results in aspergillosis too, enabling its differentiation from non-infective pathologies.

RESUMO

Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)–related diseases are a spectrum of systemic inflammatory conditions of unknown etiology, which are characterized by infiltration of tissues by IgG4 plasma cells and sclerosing inflammation (Cheuk and Chan Adv Anat Pathol 17:303-32, 2010). Although this condition was initially described in relation to autoimmune pancreatitis, now it has been reported in almost every organ system of body (Zen and Nakanuma Am J Surg Pathol 34:1812-9, 2010, Masaki et al. Ann Rheuma Dis 68:1310-5, 2009). Orbital involvement by IgG4 disease can involve extraocular muscles (EOM), lacrimal glands, conjunctiva, eyelids, infraorbital nerve, orbital fat, and nasolacrimal system (McNab and McKelvie. Ophthal Plast Reconstr Surg 31:167-78, 2015, Katsura et al. Neuroradiology 54:873-82, 2012). The basis of using ⁶⁸Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT in IgG4 orbital disease is the known expression of somatostatin receptors in chronic inflammatory cells (Cuccurullo et al. Indian J Radiol Imaging 27:509-16, 2017) and also avidity shown previously in other IgG4-related diseases (Cheng et al. Clin Nucl Med 43:773-6, 2018).

RESUMO

Malaria remains a major tropical health burden owing to the development of resistance and decreased sensitivity to the frequently used conventional antimalarial drugs. The drug like artemisinin possesses potent antimalarial activities, but has some limitations. Therefore, new strategies are to be implemented for optimal utilization of artemisinin to improve its therapeutic effectiveness and to overcome its limitations. The present review focuses on present scenario of malaria and pharmacological as well as analytical aspects of artemisinin. Data from 2000 to 2018 were collected from NCBI for understanding the various analytical techniques used for estimation of artemisinin. This review will reveal the facts about artemisinin which can be utilized to develop novel drug delivery system either in a combination or as alone for the wellbeing of the patients suffering from malaria.

RESUMO

To study the effect of intravitreal ranibizumab on idiopathic epiretinal membranes [ERMs]. A retrospective cohort study on a consecutive series of ranibizumab intravitreal injections for epiretinal membranes was performed. Four cases were identified by reviewing a claims database linked to electronic medical records. All patients received a total of three 0.05 mg/0.05 ml ranibizumab intravitreal injections at a monthly interval. The primary outcome measure was the final best-corrected visual acuity [BCVA] at the end of the injection series, and the final central macular thickness [CMT]. All four patients completed 3 months follow-up after the last ranibizumab injection. The mean baseline CMT was 509 microns [SD = 111]. A trend was noticed for reduction in CMT [delta = 41 microns] P = 0.08. Three patients improved by one line in their BCVA. The remaining patient maintained the same BCVA. No complications were noted. In this study, intravitreal injection of ranibizumab marginally reduced retinal thickness in four patients with minimal improvement in visual acuity. No safety concerns were noticed. Further basic science and clinical studies may be warranted to assess the role of vascular endothelial growth factor and the effect of ranibizumab on idiopathic epiretinal membranes

RESUMO

A sensitive electroanalytical method for quantification of pheniramine in pharmaceutical formulation has been investigated on the basis of the enhanced electrochemical response at glassy carbon electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate. The experimental results suggest that the phcniramine in anionic surfactant solution exhibits electrocatalytic effect resulting in a marked enhancement of the peak current response.Peak current response is linearly dependent on the concentration of pheniramine in the range 200-1500 μg/mL with correlation coefficient 0.9987.The limit of detection is 58.31 μg/m L.The modified electrode shows good sensitivity and repeatability.

RESUMO

The purpose of the study is to determine the validity of an original patient symptom diary in recording symptoms of posterior vitreous detachment [PVD]. In this prospective cohort study, all patients presenting to the Hotel Dieu hospital emergency eye clinic between September 2008 and July 2009 diagnosed with acute PVD were offered enrollment in the study. Patients were given the Queen's University posterior vitreous detachment patient diary at the initial visit after detailed eye examination, assessment of risk factors for retinal tears and detachments and a thorough explanation of their presenting complaints to record their symptoms related to PVD. At a random point during their six-week follow up, the patients were verbally asked the same questions being recorded in the diary over the phone. At the six-week follow up visit, the diaries were collected and the verbal results were compared with the written results. There was substantial to near perfect agreement between the verbal questions and written answers. Cohen's kappa scores for flash frequency, flash intensity, floater frequency, and floater type were 0.6229, 0.6389, 0.6495, and 0.8603, respectively. The Queen's University posterior vitreous detachment patient diary is a useful tool for investigating the quantity, quality and change in symptoms of patients presenting with PVD in the first 6 weeks of initial presentation

RESUMO

Morvan’s syndrome is a rare form of neuromyotonia having prominent central symptoms. We present a series of 9 patients who developed Morvan’s syndrome after scrotal tap and local instillation of lignocaine and denatured spirit into scrotal sac to treat hydrocoele. The course of the disease was self-limiting. All patients improved within 3 months of onset of symptoms.

RESUMO

Bilateral anophthalmia is a rare entity and association with septo-optic dysplasia is an even rare condition. The condition is characterized by absent eyeballs in the presence of eyelids, conjunctiva or lacrimal apparatus. Though anophthalmia can be diagnosed clinically, imaging plays a crucial role in delineating the associated anomalies. In addition, often clinical anophthalmia may prove to be severe microphthalmia on imaging. We describe the imaging findings in an infant with bilateral anophthalmia and septo-optic dysplasia

RESUMO

A case report of three Omani children age ranging from one month to ten years managed in a district hospital. All three children reverted to normal sinus rhythm after I.V. adenosine and are under follow up. A detailed review of management of Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia is discussed. Treatment options include no treatment, vagal manoeuvres, long term drug therapy, radiofrequency catheter ablation, and surgery. Recurrence may occur and patients have to be educated about home management and when to seek medical help
